How to Prevent Sagging Jowls

The earliest signs of aging typically start on the neck and lower face. The skin slowly loses its natural elasticity, pulling down into sagging jowls. Dr. Lanfranchi helps patients with both preventative measures and treatments for sagging jowls.

What Are Sagging Jowls?

The term “jowls” is used to describe the sagging skin below the chin or jawline. Nearly everyone develops sagging jowls as they age. Those with thicker skin, more facial fat, or more collagen may experience less noticeable jowls.

The Lanfranchi Center treats sagging jowls with our premier facelifts under local anesthetic and oral sedatives. Some other methods may include dermal fillers, Kybella®, surgical threads, neck lifts, and radiofrequency treatments.

What Causes Sagging Jowls?

Jowling is ultimately caused by aging, but many factors can contribute to the development of significant sagging jowls. Other factors include:

  • Loss of elastin and collagen
  • Genetics
  • Facial expressions stretching out the face and neck
  • Weight loss
  • Significant sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Excessive use of computers or phones

Consistently looking down can make the neck lose elasticity, causing sagging jowls. Other lifestyle factors may include excessive alcohol, dehydration, stress, and poor skin hygiene.

How Can I Prevent Sagging Jowls?

While you cannot stop aging, there are ways to reduce your risk of developing significant jowls. Some measures you can take include:

  • Staying hydrated
  • Wearing sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection
  • Wearing protective clothing during prolonged sun exposure
  • Using moisturizers
  • Using creams and lotions that promote collagen production
  • Avoiding habits and expressions are known to cause jowls
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Not smoking
  • Sleeping on your back
  • Doing facial exercises that encourage flexibility

Stellar Service from Start to Finish

Two months ago I had a lower lifestyle facial lift. I was apprehensive, but it was well worth the effort and expense. Dr. Lanfranchi and his entire staff were kind, caring and very professional, from the first meeting to the follow up appointments.

The procedure is done under a local, not general anesthetic, and it was easy. I healed quickly and am very satisfied with the results.
His fee was very reasonable. Any further facial work I want done, I will be sure to come back here.
