General Anesthesia Risks
There is a reason all procedures, including our most recognized TLC Lift™, are performed under local anesthetic with oral sedation at The Lanfranchi Center. Dr. Lanfranchi has exclusively used this combination of anesthetic and sedation throughout his entire career, even with the most comprehensive procedure he performs, the TLC Premier Lift™, which frequently combines 4-5 procedures in one, depending on the needs of the client.
General anesthesia uses a combination of medications: a sedative, a paralytic, and a memory inhibitor. Delivered intravenously, or sometimes combined as IV and inhaled drugs, they render a patient immobile and unconscious, and a breathing tube is used to protect the patient’s airway. This brings with it a high risk of complications, such as cardiovascular collapse, hypoxic brain impairment, respiratory depression, and respiratory failure. Medically, general anesthesia should be avoided wherever possible.
From the patient perspective, general anesthesia is an unpleasant experience from which to wake, including disorientation, trouble breathing, nausea, and dizziness. The effects of general anesthesia linger for a full 24 hours post-op, and can take up to a week to metabolize from the body.
Local Anesthesia Benefits
Thankfully, general anesthesia isn’t the only option for ensuring a patient’s comfort and safety during a surgical procedure. Oral sedatives, such as Valium or similar, are a much milder version of IV sedatives, but patients still benefit from the relaxation they provide with the added bonus of anxiety reduction. Once the patient is relaxed and ready for their procedure, Dr. Lanfranchi will carefully administer local anesthetic to block pain and numb only the treatment area. The patient remains relaxed and pain free without the added pressure of anesthetic drugs coursing through their entire body.
Local anesthesia is also associated with reduced blood loss during surgical procedures and a reduction in postoperative nausea and vomiting. The pain management effects of local anesthetic are also longer lasting than with general anesthesia, providing patients with comfort and relief for hours after the procedure is complete.
Using local anesthesia also removes the need for external respiratory monitoring caused by general anesthesia’s paralytic effects. As such, Dr. Lanfranchi performs all procedures in our state-of-the-art facilities at The Lanfranchi Center, and not in a hospital operating room with an anesthesiologist. This can save patients thousands in costs and improve recovery time. Patients with health concerns who are not ideal for general anesthesia care can still tolerate local anesthetic well, which means they aren’t exempt from Dr. Lanfranchi’s talent and expertise.
