Simply put, fat is extracted from elsewhere in your body from an ideal harvesting site—such has lower belly or thighs—purified to remove excess fluids and dead fat cells, and transferred to the areas of your face where volume has succumbed to gravity and time. The procedure is simple, effective, and long-term.
Almost any area of your face can be contoured, but Dr. Lanfranchi most commonly fills out the mounds of cheeks, cheek hollows, beneath the eyes, nasolabial folds (the lines around the mouth and nose), and marionette lines from the corners of the lips down the chin.
Facial Fat Transfer Versus Injectables
This minimally invasive procedure has many advantages over injectable fillers such as Restylane® or Juvéderm®. First, it’s from your own body, so there’s little chance of rejection or allergic reaction like there can be to injectable fillers. This is particularly important for sensitive patients or those with allergies. Additionally, the purification process, where collected fat is spun in a centrifuge to separate whole, undamaged fat cells from fluid and dead cells, ensures only the best material is reintroduced as your facial contour material. Another benefit is that after some initial breakdown of transplanted fat cells, for which Dr. Lanfranchi compensates, there’s a chance the procedure will not need to be repeated in the future, and if it does, maybe not for years. This is not the case with injectable fillers, which in many cases need to be repeated every six to twelve months.
Recovery Time and Results
Patients report slight swelling and bruising at the donor site, where the material was harvested, and sometimes at the recipient site(s) of the face. These can be expected to resolve within a few days, and patient discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Many patients return to their regular daily activities within hours or a day or two after the procedure.
Results are immediately apparent, though swelling and bruising often prevent the entire picture from being realized immediately. Unlike some more invasive procedures, it only takes a few days to see fantastic results. Facial Fat Transfer is also ideal for treating acne scarring, depressions in the skin, or other facial imperfections. These results may be immediately noticeable regardless of swelling or bruising of the surrounding tissues.
Many of Dr. Lanfranchi’s patients combine Facial Fat Transfer to other treatments, which can save money and time down the road. Because of his experience performing over 10,000 procedures over the past decade, Dr. Lanfranchi knows just how much material to harvest for the transfer. He’s refined the sculpting process over the years to perfect the results, so you can be sure your care and your outcome are in the right hands.
