How Does Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Work?

Have you noticed that your eyes make you look tired and inattentive? Achieve a bright-eyed, refreshed look with eyelid surgery. This procedure may address the upper or lower lids to address concerns such as loose skin, sagging eyelids, and puffy under eye bags. It restores a more youthful appearance that helps your entire eye area look refreshed and smooth.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty corrects a range of concerns with the upper or lower eyelids. Common concerns for the upper eyelids include sagging and wrinkles, while the lower eyelids can be affected by drooping and undereye bags. Eyelid surgery can be performed on both eyelids for more complete rejuvenation. It can also be performed in combination with many other procedures.

How Does Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Work?

The details of your procedure will depend on your needs and concerns. Upper blepharoplasty incisions are hidden in a crease, making them nearly invisible. Lower blepharoplasty incisions may be concealed in a crease or inside the eyelid. Dr. Lanfranchi uses a local anesthetic to perform your procedure, which typically takes under an hour.

During the procedure, Dr. Lanfranchi will lift and tighten excess skin. He will also remove or reposition fat pads to improve puffiness. He may remove excess skin that has sagged enough to get in the way of your vision. You will not feel anything during the procedure and will not have to recover from anesthesia afterward.

Do I Need Upper or Lower Eyelid Surgery?

Some people’s concerns focus on their upper or lower eyelids. Others notice issues affecting both eyelids. You may benefit from an upper blepharoplasty if you have concerns such as sagging, wrinkled eyelid skin that may affect your vision. You can benefit from a lower blepharoplasty if you are bothered by undereye bags, puffiness, or drooping.

People who have eyelid surgery may choose to combine it with another procedure, such as a brow lift or facelift. In many cases, eyelid surgery is a key piece in the puzzle of creating a harmonious, youthful appearance.

What is Recovery Like After Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery usually results in a smooth recovery with minimal time away from work. People are usually back to work within three or four days and can resume their usual exercise routine within about a week. Most people experience minimal discomfort, although you may have some swelling in the area. Dr. Lanfranchi will monitor your progress through follow-up visits until have healed completely.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is appropriate for healthy adults with concerns about signs of aging around the eye area. Good candidates have reasonable expectations and understand the procedure’s risks and benefits. You may not be a good candidate if you have certain medical or eye health conditions.
