Over time, the aging process causes the skin to thin and lose its elasticity. This can result in droopiness, bags, and wrinkles around the eyes which can give the appearance of being tired, angry, or frustrated. At The Lanfranchi Center, one of Dr. Lanfranchi’s favorite procedures is an upper eyelid lift to help restore his patient’s eyes to a bright, youthful appearance.
What is Upper Blepharoplasty?
Upper blepharoplasty is the medical term for an upper eyelid lift, which removes skin on the upper eyelid to treat hooded eyes. The procedure uses a hair-line incision in the natural creases of the eye which allows Dr. Lanfranchi to remove excess skin and prominent bulging fat pads.
An upper eyelid lift does not change the overall shape of the eye but restores its natural shape. Many patients report feeling less tired due to reduced pressure on the eyelids and are able to apply makeup more efficiently.
How Long Does an Upper Eyelid Lift Last?
An upper eyelid lift can last from 10-30 years. However, the majority of patients enjoy a younger appearance for 10-15 years. While some patients choose to receive an upper eyelid lift alone, some choose to combine a blepharoplasty with an eyebrow lift for even more significant results. By comparison, a botox treatment usually lasts 3-4 months.
How Do I Prepare for an Upper Eyelid Lift?
Before your eyelid lift, Dr. Lanfranchi will discuss your expectations and current medical condition in a consultation. The physical exam may include a complete eye exam, visual field testing, or eyelid photography.
After deciding on the best method for surgery, it is recommended to stop taking drugs and supplements that increase bleeding and quit smoking several weeks prior to the procedure date. Patients are required to have a friend or family bring and pick them up from surgery. It is also recommended by Dr. Lanfranchi that someone stays with the patient for the first night.
How Long is Recovery from an Upper Eyelid Lift?
Recovery from an eyelid lift is very short compared to other procedures. Some patients recover in 2-3 days. After surgery, you may experience blurred vision, watery eyes, light sensitivity, swelling, bruising, and discomfort.
Dr. Lanfranchi will discuss proper eye care during your consultation and any medications you may need to ensure a quick and safe recovery.
Am I a Good Candidate for an Upper Blepharoplasty?
Ideal candidates for an upper blepharoplasty are those wanting to look years younger, happier, well-rested, and more expressive. It is recommended that patients are non-smokers or can decrease their nicotine intake for a significant period of time before their surgery. Patients must be in good physical and mental health with realistic expectations for their eyelid lifts.
