What to Expect After Blepharoplasty

If you want to get rid of droopy eyelids and puffiness, consider blepharoplasty, or an eyelid lift. This procedure can refresh the appearance of your entire face by revealing your bright, beautiful eyes with minimal recovery time.

Signs of aging often appear around the eyes before the rest of the face due to the skin around the eyes being more thin and delicate than other parts of the face. A blepharoplasty or eyelid lift rejuvenates the eye area with a minor surgical procedure. A blepharoplasty can be performed on both the lower and upper eyelids. Many patients elect to have both for the maximum results and even combine a blepharoplasty with other procedures to restore smoother skin and younger-looking eyes.

How does Blepharoplasty Work?

During a Blepharoplasty, Dr. Lanfranchi removes or tightens the skin, fat, and muscle of your eyelids. He will make incisions in the eyelid crease or lower lash line during the procedure. An upper eyelid lift often focuses on loose, drooping skin, while a lower eyelid lift may focus on puffiness, undereye bags, or sagging. The entire procedure usually takes between 1 and 3 hours. You may combine this with other treatments, such as fat transfer, to fill in the hollowness that develops with age and volume loss. Results can last anywhere from 10-20 years.

What Can Blepharoplasty Treat?

Blepharoplasty is a good choice for many people because it can treat many different signs of aging around the eyes. An eyelid lift can treat issues such as:

  • Puffiness or bags under the eyes
  • Excess skin on the upper eyelids
  • Fat deposits on the upper and lower eyelids
  • Fine wrinkles and creases on the upper eyelids
  • Loose skin on the lower eyelids
  • Vision problems caused by droopy eyelids
  • Asymmetry/uneveness of the eyelids
  • Hooding on the upper eyelids
  • Appearance dark circles under the eyes

What to Expect After Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty recovery takes less time than most surgical procedures and most patients can expect to return to work in as little as three to four days. Initial swelling and bruising can last up to two weeks, and minor swelling may take up to three months to resolve completely. Dr. Lanfrachi prescribes medications to treat and protect the surgical incisions around the eye area as it heals.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

If you’re considering blepharoplasty, it’s important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Lanfranchi. A good candidate for blepharoplasty typically has droopy eyelids, puffiness, or bags under the eyes. You may not be a good candidate if you have certain eye conditions, so discuss your eye health at your consultation.
