What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is a type of skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a laser to promote healing and collagen production. Many brands and types of lasers can be used for this treatment. Some lasers are gentler, while others require downtime but have better results.
At the Lanfranchi Center, we believe the fractional CO2 laser is the best of both worlds. Our Lutronic eCO2 laser technology uses carbon dioxide to create specific wavelengths of light. Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is gentle enough to require minimal recovery but powerful enough to give exceptional results.
Fractional vs. Ablative CO2 Lasers
There are different types of technology within the category of CO2 lasers. Traditional CO2 laser treatments use a fully ablative laser, which removes the entire skin surface. While this prompted a healing response that replaced damaged skin cells with healthy new ones, it’s also an aggressive treatment that requires general anesthesia and extensive downtime. Ablative laser treatments can also cause hyperpigmentation in patients with medium to dark skin tones.
Fractional CO2 lasers deliver a fractionated beam that only removes part of the skin’s surface. Our fractional CO2 laser still triggers effective skin healing and rejuvenation without the discomfort and lengthy downtime of an ablative laser. It’s most safe for lighter skin tones.
What to Expect After Fractional CO2 Laser Treatments
One of the primary reasons Dr. Lanfranchi chooses to use fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing is that it has minimal side effects and downtime. You can expect dryness, redness, and peeling in the treatment area for a few days. Your skin is clearing away the damaged surface cells and will soon reveal a healthy, bright complexion as new cells are made.
Use gentle skincare products and keep your skin hydrated during this time. Your new skin cells will be particularly sensitive for a while, so be sure to use sunscreen anytime you go outside.
Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing Results
After the first few days of redness and peeling, your skin may still be slightly pink for a few weeks. You’ll begin to see your improved complexion as any residual redness fades. Most patients see a brighter, clearer complexion within a few weeks, but the best results will develop gradually as your body produces more collagen over time. Your skin will continue to improve for several months after fractional CO2 laser resurfacing.
