What is Facial Fat Transfer?
Facial fat transfer is a facial rejuvenation technique similar to dermal fillers. Rather than using a synthetic substance, fat transfer utilizes the body’s fat cells as a natural facial filler. First, a donation area–buttocks, thighs, hips, or abdomen–is chosen. While under localized anesthesia, Dr. Lanfranchi makes a tiny incision to allow for the removal of the excess fat in that area through a cannula (similar to a thin straw).
The fat is spun in a machine to separate components and purify the fat cells. After inducing localized anesthetic to the facial area, a smaller cannula is slipped into a tiny opening where Dr. Lanfranchi injects fat, contours the face, and confirms the proportions to be even. These incisions are small enough not to require stitches.
Where is Facial Fat Transfer Used?
At the Lanfranchi Center, facial fat transfer typically is used to fill in cheek mounds, cheek hollows (depressions below the cheeks), infra-orbital rims (under the eyes), nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. Since facial rejuvenation utilizes substances from your own body, it is readily accepted. The recovery from the appointment only lasts about 7-10 days with no strenuous activity.
Am I a Candidate for Facial Fat Transfer?
Anyone wanting to improve the contours of their cheeks, volumize the lips, and fill in under-eye hollows for a more extended period of time is a good candidate for facial fat transfer. Ideal candidates have fat in the hips, thighs, abdomen, or flanks for the transfer. Since you are using your own cells, there is no chance of rejection or an allergic reaction like synthetic dermal fillers or implants.
Unlike dermal fillers that last a few months, facial fat transfer may last years and even be permanent. If the fat is able to reestablish blood supply, the results could last forever. After the initial recovery period, approximately 50% of the fat should survive.
