What is Facial Fat Transfer?
Facial fat transfer, or facial fat grafting, takes fat from one area, such as the abdomen or thighs, and transfers it to areas of the face where fat has diminished. First, target areas are numbed with a local anesthetic before removing or inserting fat. Dr. Lanfranchi then inserts a cannula into the donor site to harvest the fat. After the fat is purified, he inserts it into the hollowed areas of the face through a smaller cannula. The fat is carefully injected to ensure even and contoured features. Common treatment areas include cheek mounds, cheek hollows, and nasolabial folds.Â
What is Recovery Like After a Facial Fat Transfer?
The average recovery time is 7-10 days, with most patients returning to non-strenuous work within a few days. Some swelling may persist for up to six weeks, but most can resume all activities within two weeks.Â
While there is some soreness, most patients feel minimal pain during recovery. You can expect some aching at donor sites. As needed, Dr. Lanfranchi may recommend over-the-counter medications to help manage the soreness.Â
What Results Should I Expect from a Facial Fat Transfer?
Facial fat transfer treats sagging cheek skin and hollowed contours. As a result of the minimally invasive nature of facial fat grafting, the procedure has less risk and is more likely to result in significant volume restoration. Some patients also use facial fat grafting to improve the results of other procedures, such as the TLC™ facelift.Â

Facial fat transfer results can last many years, some are even permanent. Because your body accepts fat cells more readily than synthetic dermal fillers, this results in lasting volume for long periods of time.Â
